Agent Washing: How to Tell a Real AI Workforce From a Rebranded Chatbot
The proactive AI agent workforce for Microsoft 365.
The market is loud, and a lot of the noise is marketing. This is a practical guide to separating genuinely agentic products from assistants and chatbots wearing an agent label, plus a straight account of where Outermind meets each test and where our own proof is still maturing.
The Problem, With Sources
Buyer skepticism in this category is justified, and the research backs it up
What Gartner found
Gartner predicts that over 40% of agentic AI projects will be canceled by the end of 2027, due to escalating costs, unclear business value or inadequate risk controls. Gartner estimates only about 130 of the thousands of agentic AI vendors are real, and describes agent washing as rebranding AI assistants, robotic process automation, and chatbots as agents without substantial agentic capability.

The cautionary tale
In March 2025, TechCrunch reported that the AI SDR startup 11x displayed customer logos, including ZoomInfo, without those companies being customers, and that ZoomInfo threatened legal action. The lesson for buyers is simple: fabricated proof in this category gets exposed publicly, so treat unverifiable customer claims as a warning sign rather than a credential.

A Buyer's Screening Checklist
Five things to demand of any vendor claiming an AI agent workforce
Demand a live autonomy demonstration on your data
A real agent plans and acts on its own. Ask the vendor to run it on your inbox, your documents, and your workflow, not a scripted demo environment. If the "agent" only answers prompts you type, it is an assistant, not an autonomous worker.
Demand transparent pricing
Published tiers you can read before a sales call are a trust signal. Demo-gated or quote-only pricing often hides consumption meters that a small team cannot forecast. Ask exactly what you pay per month and what drives it up.
Demand verifiable proof
Named customers and numbers that survive scrutiny. In March 2025, TechCrunch reported that the AI SDR startup 11x displayed customer logos, including ZoomInfo, without those companies being customers, and ZoomInfo threatened legal action. Fabricated proof in this category gets exposed publicly. Ask for references you can actually call.
Demand governance
Autonomy without control is a liability. Require human approvals before consequential actions, complete audit logs, an emergency stop, and clear escalation paths. If a vendor cannot show you how a runaway agent is halted, that is your answer.
Demand data-residency clarity
Ask where your data is stored and processed, and whether you can pin it to a region. Vague answers about "the cloud" are a red flag when the agent reads your email and business records.
How Outermind Answers Each Item
Point by point, including where our own proof is still maturing
Autonomy you can watch on your own tenant
Outermind runs on your Microsoft 365 tenant. Pre-built agents wake on schedule, monitor inboxes, research answers, and reach out when something needs your attention, rather than waiting for a prompt. You can stand up your first agent in about 30 minutes and watch it work on your real data.
See the agent team โPublished, flat pricing
Outermind publishes flat monthly tiers: Basic at $59 per month, Professional at $249 per month, and Pro Plus at $599 per month, all as of July 2026. One predictable subscription, no consumption credits to forecast. You bring your own LLM API keys, so model costs are billed directly to your provider at cost.

We would rather be trusted than impressive. We hold no SOC 2 report today: our Type I documentation is in progress and the Type II report is targeted for early 2027. Our customer case studies are still being collected. We say so plainly rather than borrowing logos we have not earned. Where we do publish numbers, such as how we build the platform, they are ours and they are checkable.
How we build โGovernance built in, not bolted on
Human approval before consequential actions, a Safety Gateway that gates what agents can do, an Emergency Stop, complete audit logs, redaction controls, and escalation to a person when an agent is unsure. Governance is part of the product, not a future roadmap item.
Security and governance โRegional data residency you can pin
Outermind runs in four production regions: United States, United Kingdom, European Union, and Australia. Each region has its own independent database and regional billing, with GDPR Article 27 representatives appointed for the EU and UK. You know where your data lives.
